| Holy CRAP, what a week! At the end of last week a memeber of the iraqi councle was assassinated. This guy was one of the heads of the an orginized crime group known as JAM. The credit for killing him was taken by yet another JAM member. And all hell broke loose. Once word reach our area of what happen it was Iraqi on iraqi war of a few hours, and as always we got stuck in the midst of it all. The evening started out about 1500 with a car bomb and then quickly went to a complex ambush, that was foiled by the amount of US soldiers that responded. There were some 5 sections out in sector who responder, which in lamens terms about 80 of us showed up to fight, so needless to say they ran for the hills. We got called out at leaste 5 times that night to deal with the violence in was insane. But things seem to be quieting down agian, for now.... Oy what a week | | |
| so i've been home for about 13 days now, and its not as great as i was hoping, i've discovered that a few of my friends have a much lower opinion of me then i would have thought, my ex girl friend is messing with my mind, as well as her bestfriend. and while yes im not lookikng forward to going back to iraq, i cant say i'll be entirly upset to leave either. there have been some good parts mind you. i've seen a lot of old friends who i havent been able to be around as much as i'd have liked but it happens, they have there own lives to deal with. i just wish my term of service was up so i could get back to my life, the military as taken a bit more then i'd excpected. | | |
| its hard to believe that it was one year ago that i started basic training. it seems like only yesterday that i was "signing my soul away" to the army. i must say though, the army isn't what i was expecting. its much more political then i would have ever guessed. and the fact the the military is paying the iraqi people to guard there own streets rather then blow us up is retarded. in my area alone there are 5 muhallas, and each muhalla has a SOI (sons of iraq) leader, and they get paid 90,000$ a month to pay there underlings. Thats 5.4 million dollars a year paid to people who were shooting and blowing us up little more then a year ago. We actually have somthing like this happening in the states. in larger cities where organized crime is high. its called "protection money" the whole you pay me this amount or somthign bad will happen to you. and it is my personal opinion that those people who pay that money are cowards. so you can only guess my opinion of the military leadership is. i mean for christ sake our country is in a economic recession and we're handing out cash to the iraqi people in the billions. i alone have seen my unit pay in cash 3 million since i've been here, thats not including all the money we spend on equipment like transformers, waste disposal, and other expensive crap that we just give to iraq. we have this program call "micro-grants" in theory its suppose to help the economy here by giving the people a leg up to repair and open up a store. hand out 5,000$ for them to do this with. most of the time once these people get the cash, they chuck duces and leave with the money. the military has changed, its become a bunch of wimps who would rather pay people to not attack them then to pick up a rifle and fight back, the leadership has become afraid of the "what might happen" and "what will the public think" instead of the values that were drilled in our heads in basic. Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless service, Honor, Integrity, Personal courage. we were taught that if you even get rid of one of these the rest of them become useless, well i don't know about you but paying some one to leave you alone doesn't seem to courageous to me. | | |
